Fairmount, also known as The Art Museum Area, is named for the prominent hill on which the Philadelphia Museum of Art (home of the famous Rocky Steps) sits on. Fairmount is home to the Eastern State Penitentiary which is famous for its haunted house conversion during the Halloween season, along with, the primary focus of Philadelphia’s Bastille Day celebration in which Tastykakes, a local brand of cupcake, rain from the rooftop into the crowd. Outdoor enthusiasts are drawn to the neighborhood for its proximity to Fairmount Park, along with, the Schuylkill River Trail, which is a haven for bicyclists, runners, walkers, etc. Fairmount is pretty well gentrified and consists mainly of row home living, with some condo conversions and a few high rises mixed in. In addition to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Fairmount also brings you the Rodin Museum and the Barnes Foundation, which are two of the city’s most prized museums.
