Real estate boundaries – The Schuylkill River to the east; 52nd St. to the west; Spring Garden St., Powelton Ave., and Market St. to the north; and Woodland Ave., University Ave., Civic Center Blvd. to the south.
University City has long been dominated by The University of Pennsylvania (UPenn) as it’s not only one of the finer academic institutions in the world, but it is also Philadelphia’s largest private employer. University City is also home to Drexel University, University of the Sciences, Hospital of The University of Pennsylvania (HUP), and The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). So, needless to say, there are lots of students and medical professionals flooding the neighborhood. In addition to academia and medicine, University City has multiple independent centers of scientific research, 30th St. Station (the only Amtrak stop in Philadelphia), and the Cira Centre (Philly’s 1st skyscraper west of the Schuylkill River). The eastern portion of the neighborhood consists primarily of commercial space, while the western half is more residential and contains Victorian style homes. Prices are a little more affordable on this side of the river.
