Real estate boundaries – 7th St. to the east, Broad St. to the west, Chestnut St. to the north, and South St. to the south.
As the name insinuates the neighborhood includes Washington Square and the area west of it. Washington Square is roughly 6.5 acres of open-air park space, and one of the 5 original planned squares by William Penn. Washington Square West is hip and trendy, as well as, a desirable residential community. It is home to both Thomas Jefferson Hospital and the nation’s oldest hospital (Pennsylvania Hospital). The neighborhood consists of a diverse collection of boutiques, shops, restaurants, bars, coffee shops, and more. Philadelphia’s Antique Row lies within the neighborhood’s borders, and so does “The Gayborhood”. The Gayborhood (Chestnut St. to Pine St. & Juniper St. to 11th St.) is a sub-section within Washington Square West that draws its name from the large concentration of gay friendly businesses, services, and restaurants/bars. Washington Square West’s real estate is characterized by 2-4 story rowhomes intermixed with mid-rise and high-rise condo buildings.
